Yes, yes, I know, I know--I said I have too many dolls--
twins
sedens
--but. What am I supposed to do when Y!J dangles adorable artist heads in front of me? I'm only human.

Teaser picture of inbound . . . hmmm, does this look like a boy or a girl to you?

The seller is vividlabo; the auction photos are watermarked "Doll Mate" and this head is called Hyun (definitely a Korean name, not a Japanese one). Why does "vividlabo" ring a bell? Isn't that either HeavyBomb or Rolling Pumpkin, or am I nuts? There's a powerful whiff of early Custom House about this head to me--that sharp little chin, that slightly bulgy nose, and something I can't quite put into words about the proportions of the face.

In other news, I have an exciting trade in progress for the Jin Woo, and the Megu head is on her way to Hong Kong for a pretty, soft new faceup. Yay for spring!

Back to grading my samurai class's midterm papers. I am so proud of the way this class is stepping up to the unusual material--they're doing much better work than my British Novel students. I'm actually looking forward to grading papers, for a change . . .

CONGRATULATIONS!
I could see this head as either a boy or a girl! I'd say in that particular pic, with that hair and those hands, a girl, but with a different wig easily a femme boy.

It's going to be interesting to see how the head works with the various bodies I have around the house! It will have to share, if I can manage to hold my resolve . . . not that I'm very good at that. ;-)

website. maybe you can find the answer there?

They sell a bit on Y!J. They are from South Korea, supposedly living in Japan (well, that's what it says on Y!J)

From what I can find, Doll Mate is a Korean doll board. And people may be selling there also, so the watermark might have come from a photo-up load there.

Thanks! The website is all clothing (some pretty things!), and that kind of confirms what I *thought* I had picked up somewhere along the way--that vividlabo is a loose collective of Korean doll artists, and the dressmaking people list auctions for the sculptors now and then. Doll Mate I hadn't run into yet . . . oh, for a Korean student who's interested in dolls, and willing to spend a little time translating! One of these days.

Dandelion faery, that's IT! Boy or girl, that's exactly the feeling I get, too--a creature that's sunny-tempered, but also mischievous and elusive. Now that I look at the auction listing again, I see that the head is on a Volks Tony body, but I think the SD13 boy body is likely to be too blocky and solid. Experiments, experiments . . .

Aren't those pretty eyes? I'm thinking MP Frisco might have a similar effect.

Ahhhh, don't I wish this head came with a body?! But the Tony body was just for modeling; I'll have to scrounge or reallocate one, once Miss or Master Hyun arrives in a few weeks.

BTW, I was really lucky when I bought my Saiki boy's body on Y!J; I stalked several auctions for a couple of weeks to track pricing, and when I finally bid there was no competition and the price was reasonable even with fees and shipping. If you have the time to put in on some Y!J research, that's not at all a bad option (even though the yen seems to be stronger now than it's been for a couple of years).

The scrambled mess does sound like a browser issue, or even an operating-system issue. Can you go into your language settings and choose a language pack? It might require downloading and installing one; I'm trying to think back to the last time I had to deal with the symbol gibberish, and I do sort of remember doing that. I had to do a little experimenting to figure out whether Unicode or one of the Japanese packs worked best, but once I did, I left the setting where it was, and all's been well ever since.

Once you get the language showing up correctly, these links on DoA work like a charm: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12499

After I've found an auction that looks promising, I usually use Nifty's online translator instead of Babelfish: http://tool.nifty.com/globalgate/ Cut and paste the URL of the auction into the narrow box (scroll down, past the bigger box at the top of the translator page). Then click the LOWER left circle, just below the narrow URL box, to get translation from Japanese to English. Finally, click the square button on the right, and a new window will open with the translated page.

Of course, it's daaaaaaaangerous to perfect this process . . . ;-)

Oh yes! I do understand. Lovely and different look.

Oh, Shan, Shan, beautiful Shan. *happy sigh*

I certainly wasn't planning to buy another head, especially with the Jin Woo trade in the works and the Megu just arrived . . . but imagine how bitter I would have been if I had passed up the Saiki head when I saw it on Y!J? When in doubt, buy--that's my motto. ;-)

Congratulations, Cynthia! I'm definitely feeling the earlier CH vibe. Like a blend of Nan, Jin, and, well, the nose I can't pinpoint. xD

If professors dread grading papers, why do you ask us to write them? ;D (I'm just teasing. :D) Oh lordy, I remember when I had to write a paper on this book for Hauser's Asian American Experience class. HORRIBLE. HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE!! During office hours, Hauser would bemoan the fact that he had to finish grading... ^^;;

I did do a quick comparison of the CH Hyun, but . . . nope, definitely no resemblance. I see a lot of Evan's face shape in Hyun--the width of the mask compared to the narrowness of the chin. Too much fun!

And ha, ha, very ha about the papers. XD Plumbers don't *enjoy* sticking their hands into sump pits, now do they? LOLLLLLLLL

Often Korean names have 2 syllables. Hyun is used for both boy and girl names so it does seem to suggest either gender :) I saw Hyun on YJA some time ago and thought it was a darling mold ♥

I haven't been paying nearly enough attention to Y!J for the past several months--which is probably why I went on a binge over the weekend! (I snagged a beautiful pair of eyes, too.) And yes, I've had both male and female students with "Hyun" as part of their names--I thought it was a clever choice for this androgynous head.

Gorgeous, gorgeous avatar picture there! Mine are way overdue for updating, but at this point there aren't enough hours in spring break to do everything I've postponed until then. ;-)

Glad the samurai class is shaping up. Out of curiosity, what Champloo did you go with?

Eeep, I haven't actually decided yet--I'm planning to do a lot of watching and deciding over spring break next week, since we won't get to that class period until the 31st. I have a devoted Champloo fan in class, which is extremely cool; she's rooting for the Shino episodes, but I dunno . . .

Love this head . . . are you the winner of it? I think it looks like a girl, a wonderful mischievous, thoughtful girl!! ^_______^

I'm thinking she's a girl, too! Yes, I did win this head, and I'm *so* excited--I hate having to wait for Celga to receive the package and then ship it on to me, waaaaaah . . . ;-)

I'm kind of seeing a fey, mischievous boy. I love him/her. Can't wait to see who/how he/she turns out to be.

You know, I could always solve my problem by letting this head share the Kikyou tenshi body, and choosing boy or girl clothes at random! ;-) This one's going to be a LOT of fun, yup.

I so owe you an e-mail, but it isn't going to happen this week: midterms plus the beginning of advising season, ARGH!
