Still more evidence that my job is sometimes cool.

So I was preparing for my Early World Lit. class today, and came across this passage from the Analects of Confucius:

Book IX, maxim 14 (translation by D. C. Lau):

The Master wanted to settle among the Nine Barbarian Tribes of the east. Someone said, "But could you put up with their uncouth ways?" The Master said, "Once a gentleman settles among them, what uncouthness will there be?"

And I thought, well, that's what Wallace Stevens said, isn't it?

Anecdote of the Jar

I placed a jar in Tennessee,
And round it was, upon a hill.
It made the slovenly wilderness
Surround that hill.

The wilderness rose up to it,
And sprawled around, no longer wild.
The jar was round upon the ground
And tall and of a port in air.

It took dominion everywhere.
The jar was gray and bare.
It did not give of bird or bush,
Like nothing else in Tennessee.

In other news, I'm not convinced that the Starbucks Doubleshot I just drank is really increasing my flagging energy level to help me get through the day. But it did taste good.

Just wait till you see the impending dolly arrival! Do I contradict myself? Very well, I contradict myself. That's all either Walt Whitman or I have to say about it.
